Two Gay Men Arrested In Dubai For Cruising On The Internet

Two men are facing charges in Dubai for allegedly offering sexual services on the internet. They faced Dubai’s Criminal Court of First Instance on Tuesday.

The National reports that one 22 year old man is charged with prostitution, consensual homosexual sex, producing pornographic material, cross-dressing and insulting religion, while the second, an 18-year-old student, is facing prostitution charges. Homosexuality is illegal in the United Arab Emirates, and if found guilty both face a minimum of three and a maximum of 15 years in prison.

According to the prosecution, the 22 year old man was arrested at Dubai International Airport in July 20 in possession of homemade pornographic material. He has denied the charges. It’s alleged that he circulated images of himself in make up and dressed in a hijab-like veil, reading the Quran. He’s being held in solitary confinement at Al Qusais police station, to protect him from other prisoners. He is due to appear in court on January 20.

The 18 year old is accused of soliciting men for sex using internet chat rooms. He has also denied the charges. According to court documents the accused was discovered by an undercover officer in an online chat room.

I don't think many gay people will be too sad about Dubai's financial excesses getting swallowed by the sand.

On a Serious note though, the Catholic Church pales in comparison to Islam when it come to hating on us, to be honest i think they shouldve left the country while they had a chance.

    Damn.

I used to live in Doha, Qatar. My only outlet was the internet. At that however the only way I could access Gaydar was by putting .ie at the end, every other gaydar was blocked. As was most gay websites. The bit of gaydar I could get had all the pictures blocked so even if someone sent me private pics they wouldnt come across.

Dubai however is such a "gay mecca"! If Arabs are your thing its simple to pick up (ugh, not for me) and there is even an unofficial gay bar there. The reason why that lad is being sectioned off in solitary is probably more to do with the fact that half the prisoners would be happy to get at him or simply so the prison gaurds can keep him to themselves!

I think its disgusting that these guys are being charged based on what they have allegedly done on the internet! Totally disguisting!

In the case of the 22 year old, it'd be interesting to see which charge is thought to be more serious; the insult to religion or the sex.

They're also being charged with prostitution. That's illegal here too. Which makes me wonder if rent boys can be prosecuted here and why they get away with advertising on gaydar and the like?

Very good point. I could be worng but I think the hint is in the use of the word "escort"! I think its insane but apparently if you class yourself as an escort it suggests you are not there to have sex with them! MADNESS!

Much as we like to complain about Ireland, when you read these stories about Uganda, Jamaica, Iran, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Malawi, Kenya and countless others; it makes you realise how damned lucky we are to be Irish.

Iv regularly tried explaining this to people in Ireland who seem to think Irish gays are repressed. In my 25 odd years of living and travelling overseas (ok, only been aware of gay life in other countries in the last 10 but you get the idea) I have never found Ireland to be anything but totally TOLERANT of gay society. Not just tolerant, but accepting and welcoming. Much more so then countries such as Italy, South Africa, Brasil and even the USA which are known for their "vibrant" gay communities!

Being Gay in Ireland actually rocks...i just wish the scene would jazz up a little and offer more! But thats a different discussion!

Gay people in Ireland may face discrimination or homophobia in certain areas but by and large we have it very easy.

Even the most homophobic of Irish institutions (the catholic church, or the Iona Institute) would never call for homosexuality to be recriminalised for example.
