Sorry to hear tag. It's an awkward one and although it might not be the easiest thing, it has to be confronted otherwise it will just fester. Bring your housemates together. Ask them times, etc they did see the envelope, take up clothes. See if you can narrow down when the last time it was seen.

If you do trust that both are innocent (and it can't be found in the house) then it seems likely that the guy that was over is most likely the culprit. If that is the case then it is her fault. If she is bringing back someone to where others live, she has to stand by that person whether they are a long life friend or a one night shag. Them's the rules.

Really hope you can sort it out!

Definitely approach them together. There's no way they'd be put out by it - you're missing your money for God's sake! It's only natural you'd want information from the two people who may have come across it.

In a way it's hard to think that someone you live with would be as brazen as to steal your money and then pretend as if nothing has happened - where's the conscience? But I know from experience that theft by housemates does happen (although not money in my case).

The stranger the girl brought back would be my prime suspect. She might not know anything about his pilfering and will probably be very reluctant to go and question him on your behalf.

Anyway, there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a 'house meeting' to thrash it out. I'm sure they'll understand, whether guilty or innocent!

Can't you get the check cancelled? The boss could also find out from his bank whether or not the cheque was cashed. If it wasn't he might not mind making you out a new one and cancelling the other.

First, iI think that, despite his best intentions, your boss is a bit of an idiot for posting cash through the letterbox knowing about the possibility that you live with other people.

In terms of your options, your housemate said she would be back and she would check her room for the envelope. I think you need to wait until she gets back and does that. it may be the case that she has never seen the envelope and her absence from the house, and failure to reply to your texts, has nothing to do with your money and has more to do with personal problems she is experiencing. It may also be that she has in fact taken your money and is now working to try and have it replaced. Indeed, it is equally possible that the other housemate has taken the money and is attempting to deflect blame away from himself.

You cannot possibly know what did in fact happen and it may even be that your boss never sent you the money at all - or posted it through the wrong letterbox. As people have already said, it is best to talk to your housemates about it rationally and listen to what they have to say. You will probably know if they are lying.

thanks for comment. i wouldn't call him an idiot, it was in an envelope addressed to me, you should be able to do that but we won't be doing it again, first and last. i checked all that and he did deliver to right address my housemate confirmed this.

just have to wait and see how it pans out after a meeting. i heard letter box go this evening and she had delivered her rent but didn't attempt to come in and check her room for the envelope.

But I assume that nothing like this has ever happened before with any of your mail? I dont see how your housemate could possibly know that there was money in that particular envelope and open that envelope and no others. And I guess you must be close with your boss because it is the very rare boss who insists on coming to your house and paying your wages when you have told him that it can wait for a couple of days. It does sound like there is an innocent exxplanation though.
