    Kony 2012

    Started by Bebs| 4795 posts

    Hi guys,

I'm surprised that we don't have a thread on this contentious issue yet. The charity Invisible Children recently posted this video with the aim of raising the profile of warlord Joseph Kony. Kony heads the Lord's Resistance Army and operates out of Southern Sudan, the Congo and Northern Uganda. His methods include the rape and murder of civilians as well as the use of child soldiers. The video can be found below.

However, there are criticisms of the charity. I've included a link or two below to articles which are worth reading before you come to any conclusions.

An inciteful article by Al Jazeera

What are your thoughts? Is this an amazing cause or is it cynical propaganda? Has it lead to you taking any action?

Is this real? I thought it was a social experiment to see what social media can do. They even say at the beginning of the film that it's an experiment (apologies if this is true).

Nope. He's a real warlord and it's a real charity.

I appreciate what they're attempting to do though. Raise awareness for an issue that (if it happened in the Western World) there'd be nothing but news coverage and press attention about. They're trying to raise the man's profile, have people know his name, and from the attention the video gets bring the statistics back to the American Government and deploy more resources and soldiers to track down his organisation. What's the harm in trying?

Either way, if people agree or disagree about the effects of the internet and social media, you can't deny it's now been brought to your attention, which was exactly what the creator of the video wanted in the first place. With 48 hours millions of people now know the name and crimes of a man that was relatively unknown less than a week ago. Job well done if you ask me.
